No one, not in Utah, anyway, would dare to hold a Parade of Homes in February.

No one, that is, except St. George. The 12th annual St. George area Parade of Homes will open, as it has in the past, on President's Day and run Feb. 15-24.

The theme of this year's show is "Get Away From It All." This year, there will be 25 homes that will be open to visitors. These homes will range in price from the low $100,000s to more than $1 million.

One of the attractions to the St. George area is, in fact, the warmer temperatures in the winter. In fact, St. George is the place golfers go to play in the winter. Yet another attraction is the area around St. George. The red-rock cliffs and nearby lava fields are in sharp contrast to each other, and paint an intriguing picture.

Many of the homes in this year's show will take on the flavor of the Southwest. Tickets, at $10 each, will go on sale Feb. 14 at 6 p.m. at the Center Court in the Red Hills Mall and at any of the Lins Markets. Show hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Ticket buyers will be given an official Parade of Homes program that will give a description of the home, as well as the address. A ticket will be necessary for everyone walking into the homes.

Here are some of the facts about this year's show:

  • The most expensive home carries a price tag of $1.7 million.
  • The largest home comes with 6,520 total square feet.
  • Last year's attendance was 22,514.
  • The average number of exhibitors each year is 90.
  • This year there will be more than 175 volunteers to help guide visitors and answer questions.
  • The average number of hours needed to decorate one of the homes in the Parade is 150.
Visitors will notice a number of unique things when visiting some of the homes. For example, courtyards are a big thing this year. A number of homes have front courtyards. One home even has a circular fountain in the center, reminiscent of something that might be seen at larger estates.

A number of homes have also gone away from the square and rectangular rooms. Several homes have round- and octagon-shaped rooms.

Covered porches, patios and decks are also found on many of this year's homes. The introduction of the casita or the individual guest house, compete with bedroom and bathroom, is also a popular thing this year. Some of the casitas are attached to the homes and some are set off apart from the home.

The larger master suites and larger master baths also seem to be a growing trend. As with all St. George homes, large windows are popular to capture the available views of the surrounding mountains, Zion National Park and Snow Canyon State Park. And, as always, hot tubs, swimming pools and lap pools are popular.
